How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

We answer the question, “how does laser hair removal work”. We explore the technology up till just very recently (2019), and also the exciting new system available that is coming soon to MediGlow. Read on if you want to be one of the first in the know about this new technology.

How it Works

Laser hair removal is a procedure that uses a medical-grade laser to remove unwanted hair. It works because the laser emits light at specific wavelengths that are absorbed by the hair’s melanin, the natural colouring in plants and animals that gives your hair its colour, or pigment. When a certain wavelength of light hits a certain pigment, the light energy instantly changes from light into heat. The sudden burst of heat ‘zaps’ the hair, as well as the follicle (the root) that generates new hair growth. The laser works through heat damage which can stop (or delay) future hair growth.

Till recently, when people were considering methods for removing hair, laser hair removal was often stricken from the list in favour of cheaper alternatives, such as waxing or shaving, as traditional laser treatment can involve multiple expensive, time-consuming treatments. This older technology can have varying results — because of the way the lasers have worked to-date, most work best on light skin with darker hairs, which rules out a great number of people who have darker skin tones with lighter hair. The new technology we are introducing is far less painful, much much faster, more effective with far more skin and hair tones, and much cheaper, with long-lasting benefits.

Is it Painful?

Up till recently, laser hair removal had involved a feeling almost as if being flicked with a rubber band on the skin. The hair follicle and the hair itself are different pigments, which means that a stronger laser has, to date, been used. This can cause pain. This is tolerable for small areas but for longer periods and depending on your pain tolerance it can be very painful – especially when you’re looking to treat a large area, such as a full leg.

Introducing a Laser Hair Removal Technology for the 21st Centuryhow does laser hair removal work

We’re excited to announce that we will soon be the first laser hair removal clinic in Cork to use the latest solid-state laser hair removal technology. This new tech is much faster, less painful and works on far more skin types than ever before.

Whereas traditional laser hair removal takes roughly 60 minutes to do a leg, our new laser technology will do it in 6-10 minutes without any retouching necessary, so this will allow sessions that take far less time than they used to. This means that we can provide you with faster service, we can pass those savings on to our customers. This is also the only laser technology currently available that can treat almost any skin tone safely and effectively. And added to this, while almost all laser technologies promise reduced pain, we finally have a system that does this rather than merely aspiring to. Because the system uses two wavelengths: one targeting your specific hair pigment and another for your follicle pigment, the system can use a much less intense laser, which does the job with less heat and therefore less pain.
